GQ, POP and more LOVE

Picked up this beauty on my travels.

The special edition, 20 years anniversary of 'GQ'.Packed full of past and present editorial and a gorgeous section on past covers. If your into editorial design then this is a beast of a book, with beautiful typography, fantastic photography and stylish grids.

On another note I'm eagerly awaiting the new
magazine 'LOVE' from publishers Condé Nast.
After beig an avid follower of 'POP' magazine,
it's going to be interesting to see the outcome.
Also, in relation to this, it's going to be fun to
see how publishers Bauer formulate a reply to
the leaving of Katie Grand and the pendemic
of implementing a new full team.

Christmas, food and BUCK

So, another year has passed and design trends have come and gone. It's been a turbulent one for myself in particular, from moving cities to doing what I love (being creative) - my year's been a beautiful one!

Upping sticks from Manchester to Liverpool was my major change. Leaving the beautiful City to embark on a career which, I know will take me places and expand my knowedge of design and life. Afer applying furiously to countless design houses in Manchester it seemed like everyone was in the same boat, no experience - no job, but, come on, how do I get the experience without the
JOB!

I was determined not to drop at the first hurdle, second or thirty first. I was going to make it, with morals intact of course. Out of no-where a call came from a publishing house in Liverpool asking me for an interview, my face instantly set on fire and my brain into overdrive like a kid being given a new toy! I snapped up the chance for an inteview within the first breath, my chance had came!

After two interviews I was fully accepted within the company as an Account Creative.

So let's re-cap:

  • went college
  • went uni
  • set up self employed during uni as I knew I needed experience to get my foot in the door
  • worked for some fantastic people (Noise Festival in paticular)
  • worked a standard job as bills dont get paid with fresh air
  • hunted like a dog for a design role with decent career routes
  • JACKPOT!
It kinda prooves that it does take perseverance. There were points where I felt my soul was being sucked from beneath me, nights where I racked my brains trying to amalgamate plans for my next applicatory assault. Just persevere.
After joining the Publishers, I am now desinging their free lifestyle publication and also the advert/orials contained within. Together with this I also get to create the business cards and marketing campaigns. So much freedom!
In my short time I have also been made Company Secretary, am on the board of the directing staff and assistant to the operations. Im finding that I crave responsibility and want to push to learn not only the design side but also the direction, operations and business side. My brain is well and truly a proverbial sponge.

*omit spelling mistakes, due to festive awakeness for nie on 19 hours!*

Apropos my point, 2009, I think it brings new hope, one of recession busting goodness. There is a downturn, we just need to be champions of change. Embrace, expand and advance. So in light of this...have a good one. Oh yeah, I'll also try and update this more than usual!

P.S.
If fashion, art and general fantasticness is your deal, then check
BUCK out! As far as editorial design goes, I'm loving it!

Christmas, NY and London

Alo'ha all, sorry for the lapse in blogging action, due to me having no time at all to fit anything in PAHH!

Well seen as though the aftermath of Christmas and NY is over I have decided to start fresh with a non-precrasto 'WILL DO', attitude to life. Christmas was yet again, superb, with the family flocking from all regions to exchange gifts and chat garb about random goings on and alike. NY was sweet to say the least, stella leading onto GIN leading onto me staggering around a house, insane but tres' fantastico!

Spent yesterday in our lovely capital of London, shopping and buying tea and scones in lovely tea shops deep in Notting hill. Walking past the opening of 'Sweeney Todd', which is def on the to-see list. Eating the best Chinese food in SOHO. Buying a random mag from 'Lady-luck-rules', getting caught in torrential rain, ques on the tube.
Returning to Manc at approx 12:20 pm.

Home-Sweet-Home.

Currently reading 'One hundred at 360- graphic designs new global generation' which was a wonderful birthday gift from an amazing friend.

Other news, I definitely recommend people to get an iTouch, they are suuuperb!

I shall be updating a bit more frequently now that I have this new found energy..WOOT!
